[Elecraft] Dropped again

Kevin:

You can put any "return address" you like and send it on out. That's
where spam comes from. Instructions for Outlook are below, ymmv. For
example, my address ([email protected]) goes out through my mail
server (mail.visioncomm.net) when I'm in the office. When traveling, I
use a dial-up AT&T account. It won't pass SMTP traffic to
mail.visioncomm.net because they fear I might be a spammer. However,
they will pass SMTP traffic through mailhost.att.net. So, I have two
accounts set up on my Laptop, neither of which actually mean "my
laptop". Both are really "my desktop", and one or the other will work,
wherever I am.

The issues you face are "using an SMTP server (to send) that will allow
Relay", based on your sign-on and/or IP address, and what you tell your
mailer to use for a "Return Address".

The greatest contributor to spam is that the sender and the "Return
Address" are not validated by anybody!

So, use the SMTP server at work or school, and a return address of
<callsign>@arrl.org. All will be both hunky, and dory.

Outlook email set-up.
 Tools / Accounts / Add / Mail / Put in a name / Next
Put in an email address / Next
Put in the SMTP Sender your connection dictates, and the POP3 server
from which you want to pull mail (In my case, they match for the
"office" account, and differ for the "road" account).

After you finish, go back to Tools/Accounts select the new account (it
will have a difficult name) and hit properties. Set "Include in
Send/Receive", leave messages on the server (if appropriate), my SMTP
server requires authentication, etc, as desired.

Now, in Outlook, the little down-arrow to the right of the "Send" button
will allow you to select the "Account" for sending. Set one up as Bill
Gates, and you can spam yourself from Uncle Billy.

When I first got on the Elecraft list I wanted to use my account with
the CS department. But since I was mailing from another account I could
not register with Elecraft.
They only allow folks to register if they receive mail at the same place
they mail from. I am sure the same thing would happen with my ARRL
account since it is just a
blind box anyway that bounces to my other accounts. My most stable and
fastest account is with my university but I have to jump through a
number of firewalls just to
mail from it so I rarely use it for outgoing mail. When I travel back
to Albuquerque I will try going into one of the computer pods and
signing up for an Elecraft mailing
account using my email privileges at the University of New Mexico.
