If you EVER have to remove an IC, it's simple as can be with NO socket. =
You
clip the leads off, discard the "bug", then remove each lead one-by-one =
from
the board. A "solder sucker" or even desoldering braid will do the job
quickly and easily.=20

AAAAARGH!!! some ops say, "What if I am not sure the IC is dead??"  =
Well,
it's pretty easy to establish that without pulling most of them. For the
rare case when you aren't sure, just do the swap and see if you were =
right.
IC's are really cheap! Especially when you consider the option of a =
flaky
working rig because you've added lead inductance, capacitance and all =
the
other horrors the other ops have already mentioned.=20

Bottom line,  it's a bit of insanity to use sockets in modern ICs in any
circuit that handles high data rates or RF wherever they can be avoided. =
