Usually, IC sockets that are constructed in what is often called
"machined-pin" sockets are better than "pressed metal pin" sockets.
Perhaps the "machined-pin" sockets would be a better choice.... some-thing
like the Sealectro "machined-pin" sockets....

One wonders if there exists any qualitative data to support that apocryphal
assessment.

The question that comes to mind: "What is the advantage that is supposed to
attend to the use of sockets for all ICs?" I can think of nothing
significant.
