I posted the same question about 6 months ago, and got some interesting
private replies from some European builders.

It seems that many US "standard" ic sockets are exremely poor in quality
when compared with European - something to do with the fact that the US is
no longer a UK colony I suppose :-)

This, I have been told by more than one builder, is probably one of the
reason why socketting is frowned on. I would never advocate doing something
frowned upon (like inhaling resin fumes !), especially if it affect
warranty. However it would explain why a number of Europeans have felt bold
enough to use sockets anyway.
