Yikes! That's true for single signal reception!
In that case he could hear a true zero beat and would lose single
signal reception, but he's still be receiving signals although the beat
note would be fairly low if he's using a narrow filter (i.e. 400 Hz
bandwidth filter with the BFO sitting in the middle of the bandpass
would limit the "note" to a maximum of 200 Hz above or below the carrier
frequency).

Ron, it is a problem if his BFO is drifting into the filter passband.
The BFO always needs to be outside of the filter passband.
