I don't see what the big deal is here.

Even if you ground a crystal on the side, if you use good technique, 
there's no risk of disrupting the seal at the base.

I use a solder-blob technique. I get the iron close, put a little blob of 
solder on the tip, and then apply it immediately to the crystal/wire 
junction about 1/3 the way up the side of the crystal. Make sure the wire 
is already in contact with the crystal side. The solder should take 
instantly to the crystal case. Very little heating is involved.
