HA, Vic! That's EXACTLY why, more often than not, I end up with pencil
and paper doing something myself from scratch. Of course, in this case
one would get the ergonomics AND the excellent Elecraft electronic
design work.
I picture modifying a rig like the K2 as crawling out on a very wet,
slippery slope. Just an inch (or a centimeter) further and suddenly you
start to slide. And from that moment on every movement makes you go down
the slope faster and faster. Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhh rgh!
I have a hunch Eric and Wayne know that process and that feeling. It's
probably what got them from the Norcal rig to the K2, Hi!
So I try to treat that feeling with the same respect that I do household
chores. When I'm overtaken by the desire ACTUALLY to do something, I sit
down quietly and pound brass until it goes away.

The thing that always stops me is that what you would want is not just a
bigger box, but some of that extra space utilized more...ergonomically.
For example, I would like a momentary vfo A/B switch that takes effect
instantly, for checking pileups (now I tap the A/B switch twice rather
than wait for the 'hold'). Other functions which are menu functions
could have their own dedicated switches, etc. But this is hard to
implement just by clever wiring. And -- you could do a lot of work and
end up with nothing more than a messed up K2.
But -- I have a plan. Suppose you put a K2 in a large box, and extended
just a few of the controls to the new panel -- the encoder, the RF/AF
pots, the power switch. Then you add all of the buttons...
All of the advantages of a computer-controlled radio without the
annoyance of a computer!
