It works fine, Bob. Just tune it in like SSB. No selective fading
because the filter rejects the carrier, which is replaced by the BFO.
Less QRM because you only need one sideband. Nice thing with listening
to an AM signal on the K2 is that you can choose which sideband is in
the clear and reject the other one.
The big drawback with the receiving AM on the K2 is the limited audio
bandwidth since it was designed with just barely enough bandwidth for
good "voice" intelligibility. That same limited bandwidth also means
that it's not practical to include a normal 'envelope detector' in the
K2. The maximum IF bandwidth available is far too narrow for decent
reception that way.
Now you want real AM and a CW receiver that will show you a REAL "zero
beat" as you tune through the signal? I've got a nice homebrew Superhet
with a regenerative detector in it. Has tubes no less -- yet it runs
off a 12-volt station supply. QST tells me the construction article is
due for publication sometime this winter.
