I had this problem with my K2, turned out that I had put one of the Varicap 
diodes in the wrong way around in the IF filter (can't remember which one, 
probably D39 as it's post AGC detector) ACG was working ok, just very low 
audio. Turned it around (it was ok) and since then my K2 is LOUD

If I remember correctly the diode had 2 flat sides which was why when I Was 
building I slipped up and why it was pretty hard to spot.
