Hi

Tom's method is good. But I use a little different method Here is how I d=
o it:

 Strip of the outer cover about 1/2 - 3/4 in then push back and remove al=
l of the shield except 1/8 in next to the outer cover. Wrap 2 turns of st=
ripped insulated hook up wire around the shield starting opposite the out=
er cover winding towards the outer cover. Quickly solder the wire to the =
shield so you don't melt the center conductor. Bend the wire back away fr=
om the end of the coax and slip a short piece of heat shrink over the sol=
der joint and shrink. Now bend the hook up wire back towards the end of t=
he coax and trim it to the same length as the center conductor. Strip the=
 center conductor and the hook up wire, test for shorts and install the p=
ins and housing. This makes a nice looking termination and there is no ch=
ance of frayed shield wires shorting out, plus the wires seem to break le=
ss often if flexed.

Hi Benjy:

The very LAST thing you want to risk is having one (or more) of the fine =20
shield wire strands short out against something else... as a result, it's=
 =20
safest to keep the point where the shield separates from the coax a bit =20
removed from the board.

The way I handled my cable was to separate the wires as instructed. Then,=
 I =20
cut the shield to about 1/4" long, twisted it, and (quickly) tinned it. I=
 =20
then folded it back against the outer insulation of the RG-174 and (again=
, =20
quickly) soldered a 1" length of flexible length of #20 insulated hookup =20
wire to the shield. I then covered this connection (around both the =20
connection AND the RG-174 itself) with a short length of heatshrink, =20
allowing the hookup wire ground lead and the center of the RG-174 to exte=
nd =20
well past the heatshrink. Then I cut the ground lead to length, stripped =20
and tinned both leads and installed.
