FWIW, Earl, Ron's hearing is not the issue.  My K2 has abundant audio, 
like his.  And my hearing has definite limitations: Deaf in one ear 
(with a high level of tinnitis) and age-related roll-off in the other. 
 Yet I run my AF gain at 0900 normally and have NEVER advanced it above 
1100 (and that's when I use an outboard DSP unit that needs more drive).

Clearly there is something amiss you rig and others.  And it does not 
seem to by S/N related. At least there are both early and late units 
with great audio and, it seems, some in each catagory with deficient audio.

Quite a mystery and one that needs solved.
