You are right, Bruce, it is NOT a single incident. It is a problem that
affects a certain number of K2's for some reason. I happen to have one
of the K2's that will make a LOT of audio. Still I've followed the posts
that have come up from time to time over the past two years. 

The fact that you use your K2 in a vehicle might make a difference. Not
in how it works but many vehicles have a much, much higher ambient noise
level than shacks or even typical outdoor areas. The K2 audio is rated
at "1 watt, max." which is NOT very much as amplifiers for use in
vehicles go. 

I'd suggest that one way to evaluate that is to turn up your ST L
(sidetone level) to 255 and see how loud it seems. If it sounds LOUD in
the house and quiet in the vehicle at the same sidetone level, it's a
problem with ambient noise. If it's not darn near unbearable at 255 in
the house, it's probably not as loud as mine. I can't and won't be near
my K2 at that sound level.

I have had a big problem with my audio output.  (I made were several
posts about 6 weeks ago.)  I am trying to use the K2 mobile and the SSB
audio was not high enough to use it in this application.  (CW is OK) Too
much road, wind, air conditioner,background noise.  I've spent quite a
bit of time on this issue.  I now have a way to use it in the truck with
the RF and AF gains on full blast with the preamp on with an external
speaker about 2 feet from my head:
