One simple test is "does the band noise increase when the antenna is connected?"

If it does, then the 'sensitivity' is adequate (notice that I don't define that
term)!

Something I learned is that it is very hard to adjust the filters/BFO by ear. 
In order to make sure that you have done this optimally, you really should get
the Spectrogram program.
