Well, my K2 is SN 0023, and it has always had "just adequate" audio, but barely. I find it necessary to frequently run both RF and AF gain on full, both sepaker and 
headphones. I particularly went out and got some 32 ohm headphones for the K2. Helps, but only a little.  I use an amplified speaker in the shack.

I disagree on the issue being on of RF sensitivity. With the increase in audio from the amplified speaker, sensitrivity is all you could use, even with the preamp off. I still 
think it is a variation in the AF amp from one unit to another. I compared my K2 side by side with another one (around SN 800 or so), and it had MUCH more audio than 
mine does.
