Personally I can't see what all the great fears are when soldering crystals.
In the last few years I have used probably over 100 of these small crystals
in many projects and have never lost a single crystal.  My only thought is
that some clown would put so much heat there that he would char the fiber
base that holds the wires but I find that hard to believe too.  I have
removed the cans from the bases to change frequency too by un soldering the
joint with out damage.  The only time I have damaged them is by agressively
opening those with welded bases.  These crystals are pretty rugged.  Take a
couple of unused ones (from junked stuff) and put them thru the paces to
discover exactly how tough they really are.  Lets not scare ourselves un
necessarily.
