Actually, it doesn't.  New K2 firmware, for example, could use the RIT
control to adjust passband tuning, by computing and adjusting the offset of
the PLL ref oscillator (pulls the VFO) and the BFO.  Move them equal amounts
in frequency, and you shift the passband.  A push of PF1 could be used, for
example, to toggle the function of the knob from RIT to PBT, so you could
have both functions in the radio.

The K2 is first and foremost, a CW rig.  CW rigs don't much need PBT, as you
can just keep narrowing the filter at your preferred pitch to reject
off-frequency interference.  This is what the K2 does.

For SSB operation, you can do the "crude" method by setting up filter
positions.  But I'd sure rather just turn the knob to get what makes it
easier for me to copy, rather than have LOW-NORMAL-HIGH as it is currently
limited to.
