Neither, Thomas.
The 2nd Xfil, which C180 is a part of, has a distinct tilt in its
bandpass that makes SSB signals sound high-pitched or "tinny" on one
sideband and low-pitched or "bassy" on the other sideband. The 2nd Xfil
is the "cleanup" filter at the output of the IF amplifier in the K2
receiver. It has NO effect on transmit audio quality, but it has a
tremendous effect on the receive audio quality.
For best SSB sound, there is a modification that involves a few parts to
make the response of this filter flatter across the IF passband. Go to
the Elecraft web site at www.elecraft.com, select "Builder's Resources"
from the menu on the left, then select "Mods" from the list. On the
page that opens find "K2 2nd Stage Xfil Mod, for 'Flatter' SSB Filter
Response" down near the bottom of the list.
It is a VERY worthwhile mod to use if you will do any SSB voice work at
all. It is simple and effective. Wayne says that it will be a part of
the basic K2 in the future once they update the RF printed circuit
board.

...is it correct not to install C180 on K2's RF board in general or does
this depend upon installing the KSB2 SSB-option?
