Sorry folks - I must learn to engage brain before applying fingers to
the keyboard!

Soon after posting the original query (at midnight), I had another look
at the problem and realised that Q10 must be the culprit. I replaced it
with one of my spare 2N7000's, and the test reading at U1 pin 2 came
good. It all took less time that posting the original email!
