I have only ever used Kester. What you describe sounds similar to what I 
currently use. I have a 0.5kg (500 grams which is about 1.1 pounds) roll of 
Kester number 24-0063-23 which has an alloy of Sn63 and a diameter of 
0.75mm (about 0.02 inches). One roll lasts a very long time unless you are 
constantly building things.
