More important to me whenever something is "thrown away" is that it's
one more bit of detritus in the landfill. My Makita has had 20 years of
hard use and it's still going strong (Recently I did have to
replace/recycle one of the two battery packs I use with it). My big
Weller soldering gun, which I still use every week on larger jobs, will
be 50 years old next year. And sitting on my workbench is a pair of
diagonal cutters that I use regularly for heavier gage wire. They are
telephone lineman's cutters dating back to about 1930 - a hand-me-down
from my Dad that still work FB.

My friend's argument is I can buy the cheap meter when it breaks go get
another one. I can do that 4 or 5 times and still come out ahead. They
are throw away items. I guess he has a point but there is the hassle of
getting another one just when you need it.
