[Elecraft] Operating Split Mode

Last night on 7.053 MHz I heard D44AC, Cape Verde Islands calling CQ on LSB with a 5-9 signal.  Obviously I could not call him back on phone since US amatuers do not have phone privledges in that part of 40 meters.  However, placing my K2 in CW mode the audio was almost unreadable even with the widest CW filter, OP1.  I also was not sure of my transmitted CW signal would be within his receiver passband.  Any advice on split mode opearations with the K2 from those who have done so succesfully?
