K2 S/N 2818 passed the ultimate test: a QSO this evening on 30 meters with
6F1LM in Mexico City, minutes after the (hopefully) last bad connection was
fixed. 10 watts to a Butternut vertical.
Now that I've mastered cold solder joints, unsoldering and determining the
limits of mistreating CMOS technology, on to integration of SSB, KPA100, etc.
A few construction aids I discovered: searching (CTRL-F) in the PDF version
of the manual locates part numbers not only in the text but also in the
circuit diagram and the board layout drawings. Saved lots of time.
Some time ago I built the wattmeter in June 2001 QST which is great for
measuring low power (and it also makes a sensitive field strength meter). A
40 dB tap is used to measure power up to 100 watts. It occurred to me I
could use the tap with another radio connected through it into a dummy load
as a signal generator by attaching the tap output to the K2 antenna jack.
Worked great
