Geoff, Vic and others:
You said "My current 50 ft high 160 m quarter wave (or similar)
inverted L
works fine provided you have a good ground radial system. I have
about 40 radials and about 50 sq. metres of chicken wire under the
feed point. It is fed directly with 50 ohm coax and I get 1.5:1 SWR
on about 1830 kHz. Obviously no good for 80m and/or 40m as it
stands. So to multi-band: there are 3 options, I am on number 3 and
having considerable success with it."
I am about to test still another option to get a good antenna going
for both 160 and 80 M. The concept is explained in a QST article:
From the September 1983 issue, page 25 "A Top-Fed Vertical Antenna for
1.8 MHz - PLus 3".
The author shows how a very simple scheme without traps, tuner etc., can
be built to cover not only 160 and 80M, but 40 as well. One feed line.
My system is built, but the wx has been bad here until today. I'll be
testing the system tomorrow, and report back if you like. I pulled the
article off of my ARRL QST CDROMs, so have no way to send it to you over
the E-MAIL, but I would be very glad to make a paper copy and post it to
whomever wants to see it.
There is also an article that uses somewhat the same idea in an ARRL
Antenna Compendium:
Antenna Compendium #6 Page 202 "A Close Look at the Flattop Vertical
Antenna" by Thomas Kuehl AC7A. I have seen posts from Tom on the QRP-L
from time to time.
