  Thanks for your thoughts on the filter issue.  I just got through 
broadening FL4 to 700Hz (same as FL3) and giving it identical settings.  It 
sounded and worked exactly the same as FL3, so there is clearly nothing 
wrong with the xtals.  I then redid FL4 at 250Hz, and that seems much 
better.  I'm not sure why my original xtals did not appear to have the same 
problem.  It could be, to look on the positive side, that they were not 
able to be effective enough to cause troubles at such a narrow setting. 
But who knows?  Anyway, I am quite sure there is nothing really wrong.
