My response:

If you have a real desire to cut the shaft the best method would be to use a
dremel cutting wheel.  You will likely need a few wheels unless you
carefully jig things to prevent wheel breakage.  Note that I would not
attempt this for fear of getting metal in the bearings.  You would need to
hold the shaft very stable and wrap something around it to keep the filings
out.

As far as the FT-100 knob goes, some of us do not want to have the extra
weight and are very pleased with the standard knob, myself anyway.  With all
the talk it may make sense for Elecraft to offer something like this as an
option.
