Trees are not tall on base at KSC, maybe a few pines down on Merritt Island
at edge of base. The closer to the launch pads at 39 and beaches of Cape
Canaveral Air Force Station, the less tall vegetation to impede helio
flights, or aircraft. It is a barrier island, beach type of area, sandy,
marshy, swampy inland.
The local radio clubs members at Titusville, Cocoa Beach and Merritt Island
communities should be able to say if hams were EVER allowed to operate on
base during launch phase. It is not the K2 fundamental frequencies of
concern, but harmonics and intermod products. Check for a Range Frequency
co-coordinator's office on base for following EMC guidelines, avoid RFI,
etc.
Also the large contractors are Lockheed, Grumman, Boeing, and their
engineering depts., or their joint operation known as the Space Alliance
offices may be able to give you detailed info.
The street light poles in the parking lot are the largest vertical object I
remember about the visitors center, on the East West Titusville Road. Not
sure it that is the same area you are referencing. The areas closer to LCC
and VAB are pretty flat. You see the VAB from miles away, and as you get
closer, it is an interesting illusion. It is so tall, it does not get
bigger as you travel a mile, it is dominating the landscape which is swampy
and low brush, except where the industrial area has been cleared of all
brush and trees.
Of course, it is sub tropical, so could have grown some other vegetation
since my work there.
Check those clubs and the web sites of all, might be able to find rules
about bringing CB on base, or FRS and NASA would lump amateur radio into
that class probably.
