Changing the crystals will affect both the receive and the transmit
audio. Some early K2s had crystals that produced too narrow of a filter
passband which caused the transmit audio to be less effective than too
wide of a bandwidth. As I understand it, they were shooting for
something just over 2 kHz. As those changes were taking place Elecraft
tightened the matching specifications to produce a better filter
response overall. That lead to the demand of lots of new crystals sets. 

For improving the RECEIVE audio, you may be thinking of the 2nd xfil
flattening mod. This mod  does affect only the received audio and should
be done FIRST! Elecraft recommends that this mod be done on all K2s.
