[Elecraft] K2/100 or (I hang my head in shame...) Icom 706???

Just upgraded from Tech to General license and am itching to try mobile
HF
(I spend a lot of time driving on the wide-open highways of West Texas
and
boy does it get B-O-R-I-N-G!). I built a K1 and that experience was a
blast. Now I'm trying to decide on a radio that can go mobile but also
serve as a base unit, has SSB capabilities and offer more coverage than
my
2 band K1. Anyone out there have any experience using the K2 or K2/100
as a mobile
rig? (dumb question... can the K2/100 even be used as a mobile rig???)
I've read a few postings on eHam that basically state the 706MKIIG
receiver does not even come close to the K2's abilities. This really
surprises me but I also know the Elecraft story is quickly becoming
legendary. I sure like the looks of the Icom's detachable face and of
course the K2 does not offer that option (yet!). Cost is not an issue
as
I'm guessing I'll end up spending about the same on either radio and the
whole-K2-kit-building-experience-thing is pretty important but in the
long run, I
just want a solid radio that will perform well on the road and on my
desk.
Help!!! ANY thoughts/comments/criticism will be appreciated!! And if
anyone has any suggestions on how to explain OR hide HF mobile antennas
from my wife (and I apologize for the sexist nature of this portion of
the email), I'm all ears.
