You're right, I found it.  It increases the efficiency by 20-25% at 5w CW or 5w
SSB PEP.  The tradeoff is a significant DECREASE in efficiency at higher power
levels.  

I still think that it's not a good idea.  The increase in battery life would not
be that great (since the reduced current consumption only occurs while
transmitting, a very small percentage of operating time).  In my opinion, if you
are a serious backpacker the K1 is much more practical in every respect (battery
consumption, weight, size, etc.).
