Now you need to find out where it gets worse and whether it appears in other
receivers (BC band?). I know an op who lives in the shadow of several
high-powered broadcast stations including FM, and he doesn't have this
problem - at least he's not mentioned it.

I wouldn't write off the situation as "normal" by any means.
