Agreed.  There are things I really like about the 817 (all-mode VHF/UHF, 
for example) , but other things I dislike (death on batteries).  BTW -- 
seems like the price drops may be a sign that the 817 MkII or some such 
is on the horizon.  But I don't see an FT-817 in my future.

I'm very happy with my evolving K2 (a major part of the fun) with my 
TS-570DG as a solid backup -- e.g., to let other people operate at Field 
Day and when my K2 is "evolving".
