I agree.  It's never going to be a question of cost.  People prefer the K2 to
other transceivers do so because of one or more of the following:

1) They view the process of building as an addtional value, not something that
you do to save money.

2) They see the receiver performance as an added value.  Either they are DXers
or contesters and really experience the difference, or they just like the idea
that it's there.  Many hams really don't understand the significance of the
numbers or don't use their radios in a way that this level of performance
matters.

3) They like the excellent CW performance.  Many hams really don't use CW that
much, or are happy with semi-QSK.  Very few rigs do high-speed QSK CW as well as
the K2.

4) Finally, they prefer solid performace to glitzy displays, high knob count,
etc.
