Hi Gang
How does this sound for a simple project. Take a MFJ-4125 25 amp switchin=
g power supply. Open the case and remove the rubber feet. Cut out a recta=
ngular hole in the back of the EC-2 to match the back of the MFJ. Offset =
the cutout to one side as far as possible. Mount the power supply to the =
bottom of the EC-2. With a hole saw drill 2 or 3 1" holes in the bottom p=
anel in front of the power supply for air and cover with screen or grill =
cloth. On the other side from the power supply mount a powersonic battery=
like Elecraft uses in the K2. Bring out the back a 12 Ga cable with powe=
r pole connectors on the end and a 20 Ga cable with the standard K2 power=
connector. Wire the battery to the power supply with a limiting resistor=
and diode so it is float charged from the power supply. Connect the 20 G=
a wire to the battery and connect the 12 Ga wires to the binding posts on=
the power supply.
You could also add a LCD voltmeter/amp meter module to the front panel if=
you like but the K2 already has this built in. Add maybe a power on LED =
and switch.
Anyway with the setup you would have a matching power supply for the K2/1=
00 and a battery backup. Run up to 100 watts normally but if there is a p=
ower failure the K2 will automatically switch to QRP mode on the battery =
with 10 watts or so out.
I haven't done it yet but I have measured everything and it looks like it=
will all fit. There is even enough room for my solar controller if you w=
ant to charge the battery from a solar panel for QRP field use.
If you mask off the front panel of the EC-2 and paint a black area like t=
he K2 and mount a K1 bezel over the LCD voltmeter/amp meter display it wo=
uld look even more like the K2.
