No doubt a PC board is a handy to assemble something, but there are times
when it is vast overkill! This is one of them.
I built one of the noise generators in a few minutes with a handful of radio
shack parts by soldering them lead-to-lead right on the back of an SO-239
female coax connector. It is mounted in a little plastic box I had handy
that is just big enough for the connector, a switch and the 9v battery.
For new builders, constructing a circuit WITHOUT a PCB is a great exercise
in learning how to relate part symbols on a schematic diagram to real parts
in the circuit. And, in circuits like this where you want the leads to be
short, it is often BETTER than using a PCB.
If anyone is interested, drop me an e-mail off of the reflector and I'll
send you a jpg image of my little noise maker. It's not something intended
for the world to copy, but if it would inspire someone to plunge in without
the aid of a board with nice silkscreened components on it, I'll be glad to
help!
