The stresses don't appear to be significant. At least they haven't caused
any issues over the past half century of winding. I've wound up twisted
pairs in drills using solid and stranded wire from about 16 ga up into 30 ga
or smaller.

The wire will break if you wind too tightly, but I've always experienced the
break right where the wire is held in the chuck or vise, not along its
length. The attachment points at the ends seems to be where the stress is
greatest.

My caution about using a drill at slow speed was more to avoid winding the
wire more tightly than desired. It can wrap up very fast!
