I think that's an aluminum insert. I am thinking of simply polishing the
rest of the paint off of mine so it is shiny aluminum instead of black. But
then again if I simply ignore it, it'll get polished by my finger tip over
time.

I would guess that you are also a "front of the knob finger twirler" like
me.

Y'know, it says something about the K2 when after a couple of years of
service the most "unreliable" part of the radio is the paint on the tuning
knob.
