Bruce,

I had exactly the same symptoms when I was going through the alignment the 
other day.

The problem turned out to be a not quite enamel free lead on T6 in the RF 
preamp stage.

Resoldered and everything was fine.

Further to my previous message...
I turned off all the sounds in the radio room and plugged the headphones
in the K2 and turned the AF Gain up and down...
...I DO hear background noise when I turn the pot all the way up (it seems
to be very quiet background noise) and can hear it decrease and go up
again as I turn the pot CW & CCW...but it seems low to me...i
