My experience in hotels has been disappointing, no matter how high a floor 
I am on - there is nothing you are going to be able to do to get a decent 
signal out of a hotel room where the windows don't open.   If you can't 
toss a wire out the window, just bring a HT and operate on 2 meters - last 
time I did that I worked a guy in New Zealand,  Of course he was on the 
local repeater via the internet :-).

Taping wires to the windows, using a mobile vertical, etc. indoors result 
in OK RX, but no real radiated signal.  I have just given up in situations 
like that - it's not worth the effort.   But, if you can get outside, the 
possibilities are endless.
