[Elecraft] DMM suggestion on RMS

Well, actually simple DMM true RMS will NOT read correctly on complex
waveforms that exceed the shape factor the RMS detection circuit assumes,
nor over all audio frequencies. For complex waveforms you are better off
using a scope anyway in ham work or troubleshooting. The low cost true RMS
meters are OK, but limited over the frequency range at which they are
accurate.
Do not assume that every true RMS circuit will work at all frequencies and
complexities of waveforms, for they will not.
While in my professional research lab, I like to troubleshoot with a 4 1/2
or 5 1/2 digit DMM, with true RMS; at home, I could not justify paying a lot
more for true RMS when a $16 3 1/2 digit DMM from Home Depot will do 99 per
cent plus of anything I have ever had to do over some 45 years of ham
building and troubleshooting. Better to spend that extra money toward a
good analog scope capable of HF work. (digital scopes are still pricey for
the ham use.).
There is nothing in Elecraft kits that really needs a true RMS meter. You
could benefit by any number of other tool or instrument purchases. The
beauty of Elecraft design is that you have a DC Voltage and a frequency
probe built into the K2 for example.
