Permeability-tuned oscillator.

The frequency of the oscillator is varied by varying the permeability of the
core in the inductor in the frequency-determining circuit.

You may be familiar with oscillators that use a 'tuning capacitor'  - either
a mechanically-variable capacitor such as the old tube-type receivers used
or a varicap like many solid state equipments use. We might have called that
a CTO for "capacitance-tuned oscillator".

Usually, the permeability of the inductor is changed by moving a
powdered-iron core into and out of the inductor using some sort of screw
mechanism that allows for very precise positioning of the core.
