[Elecraft] K1 # 690 receiver: more good news

All:

I have done a few more direct comparisons between the
receive sections of my K1 versus a Kenwood TS-570SG.

* DISCLAIMER* These comparisons are mine alone; your
results may vary. These opinions are not necessarily
those of Elecraft LLC or its associates (Jeez, I shoulda
been a lawyer).

I've been doing some "A/B" comparisons between the K1
and a representative Kenwood TS-570SG. The receiver in
the K1 appears to be a bit (an s-unit or so) more sensitive,
but where it really shines is the noise floor. The K1 exhibits
audibly MUCH less "hashy noise" than the Kenwood. I
suspect this is an artifact of the simplified receiver design.
The K1 also seems to be more able to reject strong
adjacent signals. The AGC doesn't "click" like that of
the TS-570. Pity; All in all, I like the TS-570. Once the
K2 100W module is introduced, I think my Kenwood is
destined for eBay. Also, the receive filter on the K1 has
noticeably fewer side effects (i.e., ringing, loss of
sensitivity, et al).

I think Elecraft has effectively demonstrated that "bigger
[or more famous] is not necessarily better". If I make the
time to build the K2 that I recently received, I think I may
chuck all my old ham gear into the Hudson River.

The transmitters, as far as CW is concerned, are comparable.
Yes, the TS-570SG has more power, but is no cleaner, at
least from an audible point of view.

73,

Bob WA4FOM
