Stuart,

I don't think they were referring to solder/flux degradation but rather to
the fact that some component leads are magnetic and thus, they will be
prone to rust over time.

I think that Team Vertical would be a good place to start looking
considering the close prox to salt water of the operating position during
their dxpedition.  I wish I could expose myself...er...my K2 to that
environment.
