I don't think its so much a matter of what Kenwood, Yaesu, and Icom
are doing wrong - they are just making different trade-offs for people
who have different needs, desires, or tasts. Elecraft sticks with a
ham band only single conversion design. The others are general
coverage, multiple conversion designs with lots of "QRM fighting"
features. There are times when the "whizzo-bango neato-torpedo
filters, DSP, and Beat Canceling" features can make copy a whole lot
more comfortable. There's a lot more to consider in a transceiver than
just the receiver's sensitivity. Elecraft has done a great job of
making all the right trade-offs for a transceiver that is primarily
portable, battery capable, and able to be assembled by the average
ham. As I see it, comparing a K1 to some of the "big rigs" is like
comparing a VW to an 18 wheeler. If you want good gas miliage to
commute with then the VW is a good choice. If you need to move your
furniture then the 18 wheeler is probably a better choice.
