[Elecraft] KD7NWU - Serial #2370 -- KSB2 Problems

I finally got the KSB2 finished and installed. When I first installed it
4 days ago, I was able to do the BFO alignment according to the book with no
problem. However SSB signals were very weak and distorted. The audio is
very noisy even on a dummy load. CW signals seem OK, WWV at 15000 is good.

I got back to it Saturday and checked all the parts and solder joints. I
also checked the resistances and voltages listed in the troubleshooting
section of the manual. Everything looks good but it still doesn't work. In
addition the BFO settings have all gone to 4912.71 and I can't adjust them
at all. The noise level changes every few minutes even if I keep my hands
totally off the transceiver. Just in case, I did the 3 button reset. Once
I got everything reconfigured, I was back at the same problem.

On top of all this, I'm unable to trasmit in SSB mode using the Elecraft
version of the Heil microphone. It keys the transmitter if I'm in CW mode
but not in SSB.

I'm stuck. Can anyone offer some suggestions?

Another question: There was a piece of hookup wire with green/white
insulation in the kit. I can't find any place in the manual where it is
used. What's it for? I feel I must be missing something but don't know
what.
