And the winner is the ham that suggested I twirl 
all the pots on the KFL1-4 board a dozen times or
so to break them in.  That did the trick, but I did 
not record who actually posted that suggestion.
Please step forward and assume credit where
credit is due.

Of course, the radio probably didn't like it when I
took it outside and showed it the Hudson River,
saying that it had 24 hours to start working or it
would be sleeping with the fishes...  :)
