[Elecraft] K1 #690: No power out on TX

Hmmmm ... I used a butane torch to fry off the enamel insulation - worked
perfect ! Did the tinning look like it smoothed on well or just blob up ?
If the latter, it didn't take. What I ended up doing was putting the tip on
the soldering iron into the pads of the toroids and boiling the solder for a
second or two. Check continuity with your DMM. Also check for cold joints
on those resistors. I'm running out of suggestions - just my experience ...
Good Luck !

When I first started building the K1, I noticed that I was not able to
get rid of that baslted enamel using just heat. Therefore, I went to
the other recommended method; sandpaper. I used extra fine paper
until the leads glowed like a copper penny, then tinned them. If it's
a toroid problem, I'd really be surprised.
I have tried turning the trimmers on the KFL1-4 VERY slowly, but the
output power just doesn't budge.
Thanks for the suggestions...Right now, I'm running out of ideas.

Hi Bob:
I had this problem until I really 'scorched' in the leads to those toroids.
The enamel is just plain hard to completely get rid of and when you pull the
leads taught you find that you didn't remove enough enamel - get close
enough to the toroid. Also check full rotation of those slugs - it will
surprise you when the last slug finally makes the power go up ;)

Well, I guess in spite of being careful and triple-checking
everything, I have run into a problem. When I started the
"Alignment and Test, Part II", I was unable to get any
power out of the K1. I'm using the KFL1-4 4-band module.
The LCD display constantly indicates "P0.1". Adjusting the
trimmers has no effect on any band.
- The maximum output power is set o 2.0 watts.
- The voltage checks on page 46 are all perfect.
- I verified all components were properly installed.
- The toroids were wound properly, stripped and tinned.
- Nothing is getting hot or smelly (sniff test passed)
- I went over virtually every solder joint in the transmitter
section and touched them up, even though they all
looked good.
- The keyer seems to work; that is, I get a sidetone.
Any suggestions?
Thanks and 73,
Bob WA4FOM
