My rig has the audio pot mod. When I turn the AF gain full CCW, I hear ... 
nothing! Nada. Dead silence. Tried two pairs of headphones, the internal 
speaker and an external speaker. Dead silence on all. So... looks like you 
have a problem for Gary S. to tackle!

PS -- Did you perhaps also make the "anti-VFO creap" mod? I believe that 
mod causes the MPU to continuously check the tuning encoder and might be 
the source of the noise. (My K2 does not have that mod.)
