Reading the manual, I never had the idea that the method given for
"calibrating" the S-meter had anything to do with setting it to display a
certain value for a certain signal input.
The procedure in the manual, only sets the "S-meter" to show S-9+40 when the
AGC voltage is providing minimum i-f gain and S1 when the AGC voltage is
allowing the i-f to run at full gain. The "RF Gain" control is simply a
manual adjustment of the AGC control voltage, so you can use it to simulate
maximum gain reduction (RF Gain at minimum) or maximum gain (RF Gain at
maximum).
Whatever "calibration" one sets, turning the Preamp and Attenuators on and
off will shift that "calibration" by 30 or 40 dB!''
