The USB-serial dongle will probably work with the Powerbook, and with 
Windows software on the VAIO, assuming you choose one with the 
appropriate platform support. Old DOS software, on the other hand, may 
not work correctly; such things tend to refuse to work with anything 
other than an actual hardware serial port.
