Folks - to make something "crystal clear" regarding my initial email:
the
QUALITY of the K2 SSB audio vs the 817 was not my question. K2 audio
quality
for me is excellent. It was only a curious about VOLUME. Please see
Wayne and
Tom Hammond's replies: they pretty much clarify any questions one might
have
about the volume level. Thanks for all replies! 73/Tim NZ7C

Just curious, Tim. Did you try connecting a 4 or 8 ohm resistor to the
external speaker jacks and measuring the maximum audio voltage available
across it with both rigs tuned to the same signal - e.g. WWV or
something?
The audio power being delivered would be E(rms)^2/R. Both rigs are rated
for "up to" 1 watt of audio power. Keep in mind that the audio power at
the phones jack is much less than that on purpose.
I ask because that would tell you if you have the "raw" audio power
available, ignoring distortion, etc., without taking the efficiency of
the speaker and its enclosure into account.
I have found a great deal of difference in the relative "efficiency" of
various speakers. One watt isn't all THAT much audio when you want to
make a lot of noise in a room.
